Black or "Show" bands perform for their audiences, and the music they play is also representative of the culture of the members, usually black. I'm black, but went to a predominatly white university where I was in military-style band. I felt the musicianship was better because we had more control of the instrument, but not nearly as entertaining. One year we tried to play "Brick House" by the Commodores, but it just didn't go over well because most of the people didn't have any rhythm. However, one rule of performing is knowing your audience.
